“Sursum corda” is a latin phrase which, commonly translated, means “lift up your hearts.” It is in this spirit that we work; it is in this spirit with which we proudly tie our law firm legacy to our own community based charity, Sursum Corda.
James Zisa Attorneys is committed to improving the quality of living and of life in the community from which it draws is sustenance. Sursum Corda is the non-profit charitable organization through which we translate our beliefs into action. We formed Sursum Corda to foster the simple, yet profound belief that the only meaningful measure of our accomplishment lies in the lives we touch and the good we do, rather than by that which is returned to us for our efforts. There can be no better an expression of our beliefs than this: Lift up Your Hearts.
A portion of every dollar received by James Zisa Attorneys from legal services provided to our clients is contributed to Sursum Corda. Every written client engagement agreement we publish informs our clients that we donate a portion of the fees from their legal services to Sursum Corda. In fact, many of our clients want to share in our efforts and if so, we match a portion of their contributions of legal fees dollar for dollar. From there, the possibilities are limitless.
From battered women’s shelters to child abuse prevention agencies, from health-care access organizations to at-risk child intervention organizations and from environmental clean-up groups to animal rescue groups which help save the lives that have no voice other than that which we give them, Sursum Corda is established to serve as a means to get some of the financial resources with which our community blesses us so richly, into the hands of those for whom a few dollars well-spent will make the most difference.
In concept, and in practice, Sursum Corda is new, growing and expanding in its scope. Please check back often to learn more about the direction our little charity takes us. Presently, Sursum Corda is pending approval of its Application for Tax Exemption from the Internal Revenue Service. As soon as we receive this tax-exemption we will “go live” and trust us, you will notice.
